Steps of the Child/Adolescent
Psychological Assessment Process:
1.
Initial Clinical Interview (one hour).
Parents (only) attend a one hour clinical interview with Dr. John or Pam McCaskill during
which a thorough understanding of the current concerns, as well as
a detailed history of the child's developmental, medical, and educational
history is obtained. At this time, it is determined if testing is recommended and the
parents are presented with information about the tests that will be used as
well as an estimated time of administration.
2.
Psychological Testing with Child (approximately three to four hours).
The child is brought to the office and greeted in a "child friendly"
manner by Dr. Pam or John McCaskill. A general overview of the reason for the evaluation
(as previously agreed upon in the initial parent clinical interview) is
presented to the child. Once the child is comfortable separating from his/her
parent, he/she is brought to the testing room to begin the evaluation process. Parents
are welcome to stay in the waiting room or may choose to leave during the evaluation.
Most of the testing is similar to schoolwork, completing puzzles, and
pencil/paper tasks. Positive reinforcement and continuous 1:1 praise and
attention from Dr. McCaskill help the child feel comfortable and confident in
their performance. Furthermore, the children love earning prizes for working hard
and following directions. Almost all children truly enjoy the evaluation
process and many ask if they can come back to see "Dr. Pam" or "Dr. John" again.
3. Parent
Feedback (one hour).
After approximately one to two weeks following the testing, parents meet with
Dr. McCaskill to review and discuss the testing results and recommendations. In
this session, parents receive a "road map" with specifics on how to
proceed to ensure their child's optimal academic, social, and emotional
success.

Both Dr. John and Dr. Pam McCaskill are out-of-network with insurance companies. However, they do have BC/BS provider numbers to facilitate reimbursement. It is customary to pay for
professional services when they are rendered. Many insurance plans cover all or
part of the costs of psychological services. If you expect to file for
reimbursement from your insurance company, Dr. McCaskill's office manager will provide you with
a suitable receipt to submit to your insurance company so that your insurance company can
reimburse you directly.
